Edith L Beck

Edith LaVerne McGaughey Beck, age 90, was born at Cold Corner near Vera, Texas to Esther and Arthur McGaughey on August 7, 1926. She attended Vera elementary and high school where she met her sweetheart, Harold Beck. Edith attended McMurry College and was hired by the Rankin school district during World War II, to teach junior high school English and history, while still a sophomore in college. After the war, she married Harold in Vera on June 29, 1946 and raised a family on their farm at Vera. As an aide, she taught special education students at Goree Elementary and Seymour Junior High School.

Edith was a lifelong member of the Vera Methodist Church and served as the Secretarty-Treasurer of the Vera Cemetery Association. She and Harold represented Vera as members of the Knox County Museum Association, wherein she helped raise funds for the Museum by baking countless pecan pies for fundraisers.

An avid collector of cookbooks, Edith authored her own family recipe book, which has been handed down to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends. Each child who married or graduated from school was blessed with a piece of Edith's needlework, which is a treasure to those who love her dearly.

Edith is survived by her husband of 70 years, Harold Beck of Vera; 2 daughters, Brenda Beck of Austin and Debrah Beck of Denton; 2 sons, Kent Beck and wife, Elaine of Copper Canyoun and Keith Beck and wife, Judy of Vera; 2 sisters, Faye Railsback and Carol Gore and husband, Larry Dan; a brother, Ernest McGaughey and wife, Marianna; 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and one to be born in January.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her two year old sister, Janell, her brother Allen McGaughey and a grandson, Brandon Melear.

The family is gratefull to the staff of Texas Oncology in Wichita Falls, Seymour Hospital Home Health, Hospice of Wichita Falls and Seymour Hospital and Clinic Staff.

Visitation will be at Archer Funeral Home on Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. After a private burial in the Vera Cemetery, a Memorial Service will be held at the Vera Methodist Church on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Steve Ulrey, Rev. Ryan Ford and Rev. Ernest McGaughey officiating, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Wichita Falls, Seymour Hospital Home Health or the Vera Cemetery Association.
