Leo Daniel Jones, 79, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015 in Wichita Falls, Texas, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church with Dr. David Warren, officiating. Interment will follow in the Masonic Cemetery, in Seymour, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home, Seymour, Texas.
Leo Daniel Jones was born February 15, 1936, in Seymour, Texas, to Garvin and Christene Staples Jones. He was a 1954 graduate of Seymour High School, where he was a member of the band. He also played the tuba in a band consisting of four other high school students. They called themselves "The Hungry Five" and they were invited to play for various local events.
At an early age, Leo became a member of the First Baptist Church in Seymour.
Immediately upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed at Treasure Island Naval Depot, San Francisco, California, and later at Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Corps Base, Twenty-Nine Palms, California. After his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Leo returned to Texas and attended Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, where he received a scholarship as a member of the MSU band.
He later went to work for the United States Postal Service. He was a letter carrier in Los Angeles, California for several years before transferring back to Wichita Falls. He earned a thirty-year safe driver award in 1991, and became a member of the The Million Mile Club from the National Safety Council. He retired in 1992, after thirty-one years of service as a letter carrier with the postal service.
Leo was a licensed pilot, earning his pilot's license in Los Angeles, and loved flying his Mooney. Due to health reasons, he could no longer renew his FAA medical certificate, but he never lost his love of airplanes. He also enjoyed classic cars, especially Corvettes. He enjoyed boating, fishing, camping and gardening. He especially liked getting together with family, visiting and reminiscing.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Larry Pfau of Seymour, Texas; a son, Michael Jones of Palm Springs, California; a grandson, Mitchell Jones of Springtown, Texas; two granddaughters, Destinee and Journey Jones, both of Palm Springs, California; a great grandson, Corbin Jones of Springtown, Texas; a nephew, Dr. Russell Pfau and wife, Christi of Stephenville, Texas; a great nephew, Zachary Pfau of Stephenville; several cousins, and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharon Jones; his daughter, Connie Kae Jones; and a great grandson, Jackson Hunter Jones.
Visitation will be from
6:00 until 7:00 p.m.
, Thursday, at the funeral home.
