Nan Gilbert Mathis

Nan Gilbert-Mathis, 80 of Seymour, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 in Seymour.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Benjamin Cemetery with Deacon Jim Novak officiating, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.

Nan was born on October 2, 1944 in Knox City to Vic “Bitter Creek” and Fannie Gilbert. She was a 1963 graduate of Benjamin High School and received a Bachelor’s degree from Midwestern State University in 1969. Nan obtained her Masters’s degree from Texas Woman’s University in 1984. She began her teaching career in 1969 for the Seymour ISD. She taught school for several years, served as principal and later as curriculum specialist, retiring on June 30, 2003. Nan married Harmon Mathis on September 9, 1990 in Seymour. She was active in the Seymour Community, serving as the Mayor from 2015 until 2017 and was a member of the Friends of the Library and the Seymour Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Nan was an avid reader and an accomplished seamstress. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dolphus Victor Gilbert and Fannie Morrow Gilbert.

She is survived by her husband, Harmon Mathis of Seymour and her sister, Judy Sue Gilbert. She was fondly known as Aunt Dudie to her 3 nieces, Stephanie Robin Decker, Kandy Annette Atnip and husband, Danny and Sherrie Dawn Berend; 2 great nephews, Justin Wayne James and Kolten Rance Atnip and wife, Goldie and 2 great nieces, Marlie Nicole Berend and Danielle Atnip; great great niece, Harmony Paige James and a great nephew, Hesher Patterson and a cousin, Kristin Kimbrell Vaden.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Seymour School Foundation or the Seymour Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m, Saturday at the funeral home.
